Luftwaffe mechanic coveralls |
|
Before
the outbreak of the war the ground crew supporting a geschwader
became mobile units following the air units. There were a lot of
different craftsmen included in these companies called "Zuge".
There were regular mechanics, painters, sheet metal and even
carpenters. The leader was the werkmeister. The ground crew did
almost everything preparing a flight, rearmour, fueling, adjustment
and repairs. They also did the most with the aircraft after the
fligh. After the outbreak of the war their coveralls was usually
blue like the one pictured on the left. In Afrika etc they also had
white coveralls. Prior the war most of their clothing was black.
The role as groundcrew could be a start for a career as an airmen. |
